Privacy Policy
Pacely is an Android app published by TNPixel ("we", "us"). The short version: your activities and location are recorded and stored on your phone, and we never receive them. Pacely has no account, no server of ours for your data and no analytics SDK of its own. This policy lists what is processed and by whom.
What stays on your device
- Precise location (GPS) is collected only while you are recording an activity. Each point (position, time, altitude, speed, accuracy) is saved to a private database (Room) on your phone and used to draw the map and compute distance, pace, splits and statistics. We do not upload it to any server of ours, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell or share it. It is not sent to AdMob or RevenueCat.
- Your activities (type, route, laps, notes, photos you attach, shoes and gear, goals, plans, records, streaks, badges, reminders and settings) are stored on your device. The same applies to your profile (age, weight, maximum heart rate), if you enter it, which is used only to compute estimates such as calories and heart-rate zones.
- Heart rate and steps: heart rate from a Bluetooth strap you connect and step counts from your phone's step sensor are stored on your device with your activity.
- Calculations (calories, VO2max, training load, recovery, race predictions) run on your phone.
- Privacy zones hide the start and end of your routes on share cards and exported files, if you turn them on.
Location and the recording notification
While you record, Pacely runs a foreground service of type "location" with a persistent notification (with Pause and Stop controls), so Android keeps recording when the screen is off. The service starts only when you tap Start while the app is open and stops when you finish the activity. Pacely does not request background location permission (ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION) and does not collect location when you are not recording. The "Share my location" feature builds a map link from your current position and passes it to Android's share sheet only when you tap it.
Optional features that involve other services
- Health Connect (optional): if you grant access in Android's Health Connect screen, Pacely can write your activities (exercise session, route, distance, steps, heart rate, calories, weight) and read heart rate, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, steps and weight to enrich your stats. This data is exchanged between Pacely and Health Connect on your device. We do not receive it and we do not use it for advertising. You can change or revoke access at any time in Health Connect.
- Bluetooth heart-rate straps: Pacely scans for and connects to a standard Bluetooth Low Energy heart-rate device you choose. It remembers the device on your phone. Bluetooth scanning is not used to determine your location.
- Voice coach: spoken updates use your phone's text-to-speech engine, provided by your device or by Google. Text is generated on your phone.
- Activity recognition (optional): the Android activity-recognition and step-counter sensors are used to count steps and, if you turn it on, to suggest starting a workout. Results are handled on your device.
- Google Drive backup (optional, Premium): if you turn it on, Pacely signs in with your Google account and saves an encrypted-in-transit copy of your data to the hidden app-data folder (appDataFolder) of your own Google Drive. Only Pacely can open that folder; we cannot see it and it uses your own storage quota. Delete the backup in the app or in Google Drive settings, and revoke access in your Google Account.
- GPX and TCX import and export: files you import are read on your device; files you export or share (including through Android's share sheet) go where you send them, to an app or person you pick. Shared files and cards contain what you choose to share, so review them first.
- Map tiles: the map is drawn from tiles downloaded from OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org), OpenTopoMap and Esri World Imagery servers, depending on the map style you pick. Those servers receive your device's IP address and the tile coordinates being viewed (which show roughly which area of the map you are looking at), as any web map request does. They do not receive an account or your activity data. See the privacy policies of the OpenStreetMap Foundation, OpenTopoMap and Esri. Tiles may be cached on your device.
Services used by the app
- Google AdMob shows ads to free users (never while you record). AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers (the Android advertising ID), approximate location derived from your IP address, and usage data to serve and measure ads. In the EEA, the UK and similar regions you are asked for consent through Google's consent form (UMP) and can change your choice later. Ads are removed with Premium. See Google's advertising policy.
- RevenueCat manages Premium subscriptions. It receives an anonymous app user identifier, your purchase and subscription status and basic technical information (app version, device model, OS and country), as described in RevenueCat's privacy policy. We do not receive your name, email or payment details.
- Google Play processes payments and provides Google Play services, including the location provider used to get GPS positions.
Permissions
- Precise and approximate location: to record your route while you track an activity, and to show your position on the map.
- Foreground service (location), notifications and wake lock: to keep recording with the screen off, show the recording notification, send reminders you turn on and keep the CPU awake while recording. Boot completed restores reminders after a restart.
- Physical activity (activity recognition): to count steps and suggest workouts.
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth): to find and connect to heart-rate straps.
- Health Connect permissions: only the ones you grant, as listed above.
- Biometric: to lock the app with your fingerprint or face.
- Internet and network state: map tiles, ads, purchases and Google Drive backup. Recording works offline, except for new map tiles.
- Vibrate: haptic cues for intervals and pace.
What we do not do
- We do not require an account and we do not run servers that receive your location, activities or health data.
- We do not use analytics or crash-reporting SDKs of our own.
- We do not sell your personal data and we do not use location or health data for advertising.
- We do not collect location in the background when you are not recording.
Estimates are not medical advice
Calories, VO2max, race predictions, training load, recovery time and heart-rate zones are estimates computed from the data on your phone. They can be wrong. Pacely is not a medical device and does not give medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Talk to a doctor before starting or changing an exercise program.
Children
Pacely is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices and rights
- Delete individual activities in the app (they go to a 30-day trash first, then are removed), or use Settings to delete all data. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data. Files you exported, shared or saved elsewhere, and any Google Drive backup, stay until you delete them.
- Reset or limit your Android advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads, and change ad consent where offered.
- Revoke location, activity, Bluetooth or Health Connect access in Android settings at any time. Recording then is not available without location.
- Manage or cancel subscriptions in Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions.
- Depending on where you live (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, LGPD and similar laws) you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export or object to the processing of personal data held about you. We hold no personal profile about you and your activities can be exported from the app as GPX/TCX/CSV; for data held by RevenueCat, Google or map providers, contact them or write to us and we will help.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app or on its Google Play page.
